3 Things You Didn't Know about Tomato Diseases

As I mentioned before, according to some estimations there are more than 10,000 tomato varieties in the world. That’s a respectful number that clearly qualifies tomato as one of the most popular vegetables out there. Unfortunately, tomatoes like all plants suffer from diseases, but here’s a relief – not all tomato varieties are troubled with the same kinds of diseases. So, besides writing about how to prevent and treat commontomato diseases, I wanted to give you a quick inside info about tomato diseases that you didn’t know.

Tomato Comes from the Mother Nature and Ends on a Fork

1. Know Your Enemies

Actually, the subtitle should be - know your tomato’s enemies. I guess you knew that tomatoes are attacked by insects and fungal diseases. But did you know that tomatoes are also susceptible to bacterial and viral diseases?

Tomato mosaic virus is one of the most common tomato viruses. It may be introduced on affected seeds, which is why you should take extra precaution and purchase tomato seeds only from a reliable seed supplier.

2. Timely Diagnose is Everything

You know what they say about doctors - a good doctor will make a quick and accurate diagnose. The same stands for a good gardener. Put some serious efforts into tomato disease prevention and you’ll be positively surprised by the results. In short, monitor your tomato garden.

3. Tomato Diseases Can Be Avoided

Maybe this is not true in all cases, but there are certain steps that will make your gardening life a lot easier. These steps include crops rotation, soil improvement, choosing an adequate tomato variety, careful watering, destroying of infected plants and soil solarization, whereby the last step is based on laying a clear plastic tarp above the garden soil. This way the energy of the sun will solve the problems of pests, diseases and pathogens.
