Fun Facts about Different Tomato Sizes, Colors and Flavors

The world of garden plants is a very interesting place. It’s the place that abounds with hundreds of healthy, tasty vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Different garden plants are not equally popular in all nations and countries. Their popularity and presence depend on the climate, customs and national or local cuisines. But if I had to single out one particular garden plant that has been widely used on all continents, then that plant would certainly be a tomato. And here are some fun facts about tomato sizes, colors and flavors that you might not have known.

Tomatoes of Different Colors Look Like New Year’s Eve Fireworks

The World Championship of Tomato Sizes - From Small to Huge

The most common tomato size categorization includes currant, grape or cocktail, cherry, pear, plum or paste, globe or slicing, stuffing, and beefsteak size tomatoes.

Now, you’ve probably noticed that most of the above mentioned names belong to various kinds of fruits. The story goes like this - currant and grape or cocktail tomatoes are the smallest tomato varieties. Cherry and pear tomatoes such as Red Pokusa and Yellow Pearshaped are slightly bigger than them but are still small.

Plum or paste tomato variety such as organic tomato Speckled Roman is referred to as a medium size tomato. Medium to large tomatoes, on the other hand, means that you’re dealing with globe or slicing tomato varieties like red Promyk.

Red, tall tomato that goes under the name Marmande represents the group of stuffing tomatoes. Stuffing tomatoes include large and extra large tomato varieties. Finally, beefsteak tomatoes like the red indeterminate tomato Beefmaster VFN H are the giants in tomato world and they can weigh from a few hundred grams up to a couple of kilos each.

Tomato Color Palettes - As Beautiful As a Rainbow

Hong Kong Chinese New Year Fireworks Display, rainbows in the sky and tomatoes have one thing in common - breathtaking colors.
When you picture a tomato in your head, you see it in a red color, right? What if I tell you that you can change the color and still picture that same tomato?

Tomatoes come in a wide range of colors from the usual red (Money Maker) over little less usual yellow (Golden Konigin) and green (Green Tiger), and up to the least usual pink (Pink Bumble Bee), orange with stripes (Lucky Tiger), purple (Indigo Cherry Drops), and almost entirely black tomato varieties (Japanese Black Trifele).

Amazing World of Tomato Flavors - Delicious and More Delicious

Together with fruit size and color, flavor is the feature that makes a difference between two tomato varieties. While describing the size or the color of a tomato fruit is not that hard, speaking about its flavor might turn to be a bit tricky.

Why is it so? Well, I assume because, after all, tomato flavor is a matter of taste – your taste. Regardless of the tomato type you decide to grow, you should know that in the end all varieties will taste like tomatoes. In my opinion, heirlooms such as Black Sea Man or Red Pear Piriform have no match when it comes to the meaning of the word delicious.

Then again, I’ve met a few gardeners and non-gardeners who are, above all, fond of cherry tomato varieties. If you’re one of cherry tomato fans, then I suggest you to grow Isis Candy Cherry or Purple Bumble Bee.
