Very few herbs can
match with an astonishing fragrance of rosemary. I already wrote about how to grow rosemary in hot, humid climates, but this post will give you additional top tips that can
help you prevent rosemary diseases. On your marks! Get set! Go!
Even Resistant Herbs
like Rosemary are Not 100% Safe from Diseases
1. Identify What Troubles Your Rosemary
Common diseases that attack rosemary
include downy mildew (which I wrote about in my post that deals with overwatering a herb garden),
crown gall and cottony soft rot. It is important to understand that different
diseases require different actions.
2. Fix the Problem
Downy mildew creates yellow marks on
leaves and is caused by continuous periods in which the foliage is wet. You can
stop it by promoting good air circulation around rosemary and by watering the
plant at the base without wetting the foliage.
3. Prevention is better Than Cure
Crown gall is caused by a type of
bacterium, which enters the herb through wounds on plant. So plan ahead and plant your rosemary in well-drainedsoil. Also do your
best not to make wounds while planting it.
Cottony soft rot often appears in
humid weather conditions. It can be a sign that you overwatered your herb. The
solution lies in decreased watering and planting only disease free seeds from a
well-known seed supplier. An extra option is to rotate rosemary plants with
crops that don’t have root rotting problems.
